Mary You are the first author of a book that I ever wrote to in my whole life back in 1991. Your book was like a mirror of my "past life" in the "fortress" I could put a face on all the people that you interviewed in your book including myself. Both of my parents have passed since I last wrote to you. I picked up your book again to reflect on their lives and mine. You are so accurate im your descriptiopn of a life that made me rebellious but on the good side to be fiercely independent and handle hardships where others would have broke down. Again thank you for your insight into a life and its consequemces that many outsiders can understand. Please accept my best wishes, Christian who lived around petit Beauregard at the same time you did. I was in High school at Garche while you were in elementary school there.

Your book was a huge eyeopener for me. I was born in 1947 at March AFB in California; my father was career AF. He retired the year before I began high school, my 12th school. My mother never understood why I didn't want to do lots of socializing with my classmates and bring them home for parties; she doesn't get it and has still not read your book even though I explained it presented a lot of the positives of a military life. My sister married an AF Academy pilot who was shot down and entered the Hanoi Hilton; he was released within the year and continued in the AF until his retirement when he became dean of students at Embry-Riddle. I am married to a "civilian" who is a very patient listener. I married at 25 and know part of the reason I waited was because fitting in with a "normal" civilian population was not easy. I am a high school English/AVID teacher in Orange, CA. I really have rambled on, but I just wanted to thank you for what you have done to help me understand that I was not the only one and that my sense of self was not wierd, but very understandable considering my experiences. Again, Mary, thank you. Donna Rooten USAF Brat
